If you spent any time at all in 2023 comparing your business, your IG page or yourself to other biz owners you see online…
Then asked yourself ‘how come I can’t do what they’re doing’, ‘why am I not there yet’?
It could very well be because you’re comparing your stage to someone else’s stage. We all start from zero: zero sales and followers.
Knowing where you are, will help you to decide the kind of content you should focus on to get to the next stage.
Think about how a house is built.
Before we can live in a beautiful comfortable home, a foundation must be built from deep down in the ground.
It's the same thing with building a business.
When you just start out, you’re trying to get all the attention. People (specifically your target audience) need to know that you exist. So, the content of someone with 5k would be very different than someone with under 500 followers.
Awareness: less than 500 followers, less than 100 sales. You need to focus on being known, seen and discovered by the people your products/services will benefit.
Reels that work: not just to show off what your biz offers; but to speak to the emotions of your target audience
Captions with bold unique statements that catch the curiosity and cut through to the core of their problems
IG stories shouldn't be product/service heavy but also showing off ‘who your brand is’ and what you stand for.
Eg. Under 500 followers, I was just building an audience. I didn’t even start selling anything yet.
I was sharing relatable content; showing off my values and attracting other people who felt the same.
I was getting attention with posts like this.
These posts sparked emotions in people who feel the same way and could understand + relate to my message (target audience).
When you're at the level of a decent following + attention, it’s now time to build the relationship:
Nurturing: more than 500 followers, some engagement, not much sales from the engagement.
Content that educates + builds authority and trust
IG story sequence so you customers get to know you (trust you)
Carousels that give value. Find gaps in your industry + fill them Eg. If everyone is marketing lipgloss based on the moisture, talk about the other features/uses of lipgloss: Lip gloss isn’t just for lips! It can double as a highlighter. Dab a tiny amount onto your cheekbones for a subtle glow or mix it with your favorite eyeshadow for a glossy lid look
Sales converting: Good engagement, followers growth and low sales:
Build urgency with promo/call to action content. Offer special time sensitive deals /bundles. Share countdowns, trigger FOMO with creative reviews storytelling styles.
At this point, you can set up your page for 24 hr sales: Someone should be able to visit your page, consume your content (bio, highlights, IG stories and posts), get excited about buying and BE ABLE to buy 👌🏽✨
In other words: an optimized page.
Imagine comparing your Awareness stage to another person's Sales converting stage. Ofcourse you’d feel defeated.
So get really clear on your current stage so you can focus on working hard on building from where you are to get to the next level.
Don’t beat yourself up! This happens in stages. Keep nurturing your current stage to get to the best one. 👌🏽✨
